Why Engagement is High but Sales are Zero: The Default Automation Trap
By Vikas | Performance Engineer • April 2026
If you’re seeing plenty of likes and comments but your inbox is empty, you aren't running an ad campaign—you’re running a “Vanity Campaign”.
Key Insight: In 2026, Facebook’s AI is Spending your money exactly how you asked it to. If your ads are failing, it’s mostly due to these 2 Default Traps.
1. The Advantage+ Audience Trap
Meta now defaults every campaign to "Advantage+ Audience." They tell you it's “AI-driven optimisation," but here is the reality: The AI is incentivized to find the cheapest possible action. The Result: It finds "Serial Clickers"—people who like and comment on everything but haven't bought anything online since 2019. You get 500 likes for $50, but zero intent.
How to Fix?
You have to force the AI back into Manual or use "Audience Suggestions" to narrow the audience. Do NOT let the algorithm “learn” you’re budget away.
2. The Page Bounce Rate You are paying for the click, but are you paying for the load?
If your landing page takes more than 2 seconds to load on a mobile device, 50% of people bounce. Facebook still charges you for that "Link Click," even though the user never saw your offer.
How to Fix? Stop looking at your "Click-Through Rate" and start looking at your Landing Page View rate or dwell time on GA4. If there’s a massive gap, your website is the problem, not the ad.
The Bottom Line: Engagement is a vanity metric. If you want ROI, you have to stop trusting the "Default" buttons. Treat your ads like an engine: if the fuel (tracking) is dirty and the exhaust (landing page) is clogged, the car isn't going anywhere.
